Advanced Depositions joins the Orange County Bar Foundation’s Project SELF program

Strong communities benefit all of us, and Advanced Depositions is proud to give back to our local community by supporting the Orange County Bar Foundation, Inc. (OCBF).

This year, we are excited to be part of the OCBF’s 2014 Project SELF (Summer Employment in Law Firms) program by offering a local student an internship opportunity with Advanced Depositions, which provides high-quality deposition services, including court reporting and innovative technology-based solutions for a wide array of law firms. Project SELF targets low-income students—mostly Latino—who are entering their senior year of high school in Santa Ana and who have urgent needs for youth development services, job skills and college readiness assistance.

Our student intern joined us on June 24 and will spend eight weeks gaining valuable experience by participating alongside Advanced Depositions team members in the areas of sales, calendaring, transcript production and invoicing. This will enable him to see how we serve a client, from initial request through final billing.

“We are pleased to support our community and especially to provide this opportunity for a student to learn about the role depositions play in the legal process and how our court reporting, technology and other services support the legal profession. At the same time, he is gaining valuable business skills in a setting that is a positive alternative for spending his summer,” says Jon Olsen, Advanced Depositions executive vice president. “This program brings very bright and engaged students who are a joy to be around. Our team is enjoying this as much as our intern is enjoying working with us.”

In addition to working 20-30 hours per week in our office fulfilling a variety of responsibilities, the Advanced Depositions intern participates in other program activities, including a day at the courthouse and a recognition dinner.

The OCBF Project SELF program placed 67 interns with Orange County law firms and businesses this year.

Participating in the OCBF Project SELF program is part of Advanced Depositions’ generous and ongoing support for the OCBF, which has included hosting or sponsoring events and fulfilling other community needs.

Orange County to Skid Row: The Midnight Runners

MidnightRunner2Thomas Miller, Account Executive for Advanced Depositions, rises at 4:00 AM every Monday morning and drives from Orange County to Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles to take part in a great cause.

Thomas is one of the “Midnight Runners,” a group of legal professionals founded by the Hon. Craig Mitchell of the Los Angeles Superior Court. An avid runner, Judge Mitchell leads the Midnight Runners in mentoring men and women from L.A.’s Midnight Mission in the skills they need to get off the streets and become productive members of their community.

“The first time I arrived at the Midnight Mission I was absolutely blown away,” Thomas remembers. “It was shocking–literally thousands of homeless men and women crawling out of tents and makeshift cardboard structures. The Midnight Runners run together three days per week and every other Saturday, hoping to provide some discipline, direction, accountability and camaraderie for people there. Since the program began, Judge Mitchell successfully trained about ten people to complete the LA Marathon. Right now we’re training about 20 folks for several races coming up.”

“I had no idea that in the city of Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the Lakers there could be such poverty, homelessness and despair,” Thomas says. “Like the Judge, I have always wanted to give back through my running and fitness. Midnight Runners was an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives and just maybe keep them from making a bad choice or decision that will start that viscous cycle again.”

Midnight Runners is actively seeking donations of running-related fitness products to reward its runners in need and to support growing the program to other Skid Row service organizations. More information is available at and at Thomas Miller can be reached at
